Architectural Photo Friday: The COR Building

24th Jun 2011 Architectural Photos by Crystal Kwon

This week’s Architectural Photo Feature soars to new heights in design, engineering and sustainability. Oppenheim Architecture + Design has designed the COR building in Miami which is the first, LEED Platinum Certified mixed-used condominium which incorporates wind turbines directly in the structure.

The most fascinating feature in the exoskeleton wall which provides thermal mass for insulation and  shade for the residents marrying design and function. In addition to the inventive wind turbines, the COR Building integrates photovoltaic panels, solar hot water generation, waterless urinals, a green roof, gray water recycling, bamboo floors and more.

Kudos to the Oppenheim Architecture + Design, the energy consultants Buro Happold, and structural engineer Ysreal Seinuk for demonstrating that design does not have to be exclusive of sustainability.
